The internet has always been there for everyone, but there was a time when only the minority could actually get involved on a creative level. Without a fairly detailed understanding of web development, you were forced to stand on the sidelines and watch.
Social media has of course changed all that. Now the internet is used and created by the many; in a sense, it’s publishing’s golden age.
The full scale of this shift is graphically emphasised below by Gary Hayes’ Social Media Count application. The one that really excites me is the last stat – sometimes it’s easy to forget that there are 10s of millions of people worldwide who still haven’t even gone online at all yet.
