Over 15 per cent of all technology articles are focused on Apple, according to new research.

An investigation by Pew, the American journalism centre, found that the company responsible for the iPhone and iPad received coverage in 15.1 per cent of all news stories relating to technology.

The survey also discovered that Google featured in 11.4 per cent of articles, while Twitter appeared in 7.1 per cent of technology articles. Social media site Facebook featured in 4.8 per cent of pieces.

The research, which reviewed tech coverage in 52 US media sources, found the launches of the iPhone 4 and iPad accounted for many of the headlines.

Just over six per cent (6.4) of all technical news stories were focused on the iPhone, while the iPad gained 4.6 per cent of all tech coverage.

Reporting on the study in the Guardian, Jemima Kiss wrote:

“Publishers explain away the excess of Apple coverage by saying that those stories are popular with readers. But are readers just focusing on those stories because there are so many of them? Either way, it’s extremely good news for Apple, which effectively outsources its marketing by offering minimal PR outreach beyond product launches; 42% of stories about Apple describe the company as innovative and superior compared to 17% saying products don’t live up to the hype.”
