Wetherspoon joins Foursquare

UK pub chain Wetherspoon has plunged into the Foursquare social networking site with two new initiatives on the geo-location game.

Earlier this week, Delineo’s social media campaign manager Tom Mason spotted that the Wetherspoon locations around Manchester were offering a special discount for Foursquare users. The ‘special’ gave regular players the chance to claim 20 per cent off their dinner bill if they ‘checked in’ at a particular venue enough times.

Today, it was also announced that a Wetherspoon venue in Cheltenham had agreed to host the UK’s first ‘Superswarm’ event, a gathering of over 250 Foursquare users, designed to award the participants with an exclusive Foursquare badge.

The Bank House in Cheltenham will host the event on Saturday 9th October. The manager of the venue, Serena Phillps, said:

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for us to take part in something unique happening in Cheltenham that will hopefully introduce our pub to some new customers too. It really shows the power new technology can have for bringing customers to venues like ours.”
