Intrigued to see that the first ever &#8220;completely user-generated event&#8221; will be taking place right here in Manchester next month.</p>
<p>Supported by the <a title="NWDA" href="http://www.nwda.co.uk/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>North West Development Agency</a> and <a title="New East Manchester" href="http://www.neweastmanchester.com/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>New East Manchester</a>, the <a href="http://www.cuttingroomexperiment.com" rel='nofollow'>Cutting Room Experiment</a> is aiming to use &#8220;the power of the web&#8221; to produce what looks like a kind of T-Mobile ad (see above) writ large.</p>
<p>The ambitious idea is for people to create the entire June 20 event themselves by generating ideas for <a title="Wikipedia definition of flash mob" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_mob" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>flash mobs</a>, voting for their favourites, and then acting out the most popular (in 12 different categories) on the day itself.</p>
<p>This is obviously intended as a publicity-driver for the regenerated Cutting Room space in Ancoats, but the results should be fascinating and I suspect it will be a huge success. As a way of demonstrating the power of social media, I hope so.</p>
<p>If nothing else, it&#8217;ll make a great regional news item.</p>

Swine flu has been a <a title="#Swineflu on Twitter" href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23Swineflu" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>trending topic on Twitter</a> for several days now, but while the UK government is sticking to <a title="Campaign story about swine flu" href="http://www.campaignlive.co.uk/news/902135/DoH-ad-campaign-combat-swine-flu-crisis/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>more traditional methods</a> of informing the public, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will not be accused of being slow off the social media blocks.</p>
<p>The CDC has a dedicated <a title="CDC Social Media tools" href="http://www.cdc.gov/socialmedia/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>social media tools page</a> on its website, and it&#8217;s worth listing the ways in which it is seeking to educate people about the virus:</p>
<ul>
<li>A <a title="Mobile-optimised CDC website" href="http://m.cdc.gov/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>mobile-optimised website</a>;</li>
<li>Online instructional videos;</li>
<li>Podcasts, e.g. how handwashing helps;</li>
<li>E-cards;</li>
<li>Swine flu specific news feeds;</li>
<li>Three Twitter accounts, including <a title="CDCemergency on Twitter" href="http://twitter.com/CDCemergency" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>@CDCemergency</a>;</li>
<li><a title="CDC's Swine flu account on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cdc_e-health/sets/72157617255862135/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>Flickr images</a>;</li>
<li>Social network presences on <a title="CDC on Facebook" href="http://www.facebook.com/CDC" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>Facebook</a>, <a title="CDC on MySpace" href="http://www.myspace.com/cdc_ehealth" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>MySpace</a> and <a title="CDC on DailyStrength" href="http://www.dailystrength.org/groups/cdc" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>DailyStrength</a>;</li>
<li><a title="CDC on YouTube" href="http://www.youtube.com/cdcstreaminghealth" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>YouTube channel</a> and other video sites;</li>
<li>Various <a title="CDC widgets" href="http://www.cdc.gov/widgets/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>widgets</a> and buttons to display on websites.</li>
</ul>
<p>Particularly as this disease has only been with us for a matter of days, a fantastic effort.</p>

<p>Concerns that Barack Obama would be forced to tone down the transparency and social media activity that had so characterised his presidential running campaign were relieved today with the publication of the <a title="Official White House Photostream on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/" target="_self" rel='nofollow'>Official White House Photostream on Flickr</a>.</p>
<p>The photos mark Obama&#8217;s first 100 days in charge, and are, frankly, extraordinary. In 293 images, we see the most powerful man in the world playing with a football in the Oval Office, chatting to Hilary Clinton at a picnic table, putting on the White House green, hugging his wife Michelle, chatting off-set with Jay Leno, playing with his new dog, shooting basketball hoops, wearing 3D glasses at a Super Bowl screening&#8230; and various other remarkable shots.</p>
<p>It all adds up to the most privileged access granted by a President &#8211; or indeed any political figure &#8211; ever seen. Hopefully there&#8217;ll be much more to come.</p>
